Telecom sites are often located in exposed, remote locations where shelter temperatures can rise well above room temperature. Temperature is one of the most important factors affecting telecom battery life.
Why heat shortens battery life
Higher temperatures speed up the chemical reactions inside a lead-acid battery, including corrosion of the positive plates and water loss. As a widely used rule of thumb, battery life can roughly halve for every sustained 8–10°C rise above 25°C.
Signs of heat-related ageing
- Reduced backup during grid outages
- Swelling of battery cases
- Higher float current
- Uneven block voltages across the string
How to protect battery life
- Choose battery technology suited to high-temperature operation
- Enable temperature-compensated charging on the rectifier
- Improve shelter ventilation or cooling where practical
- Use remote monitoring to track voltage, current and temperature
- Schedule periodic health testing and replace weak blocks early
For hot sites, lithium telecom modules can be an effective option because of their higher temperature tolerance, subject to rectifier and system compatibility.
