Solar batteries charge and discharge every day, so the choice of technology has a direct impact on performance, maintenance and lifetime cost.
Tubular batteries
Tubular lead-acid batteries are a proven, economical choice for daily cycling. They handle deep discharge well but need periodic topping up with distilled water and a ventilated location.
Gel batteries
Gel batteries are sealed and maintenance-free. They suit sites where regular topping up is difficult and perform well in deep-cycle applications, at a higher cost than tubular batteries.
Lithium batteries
Lithium batteries offer the longest cycle life, higher usable depth of discharge, faster charging and a compact footprint. They cost more upfront and must be paired with a compatible inverter or charge controller.
Quick comparison
- Upfront cost: Tubular lowest, lithium highest
- Maintenance: Tubular needs topping up; gel and lithium do not
- Cycle life: Lithium highest, followed by gel and tubular
- Usable capacity: Lithium allows deeper discharge
The right choice depends on daily energy use, budget, available space and maintenance access. Share your system details for a recommendation.
