Peak shaving uses a battery energy storage system (BESS) to supply part of a facility’s load during periods of high demand, reducing maximum demand charges and peak-tariff consumption.
1. Understand your load profile
Interval data from the energy meter shows when peaks occur, how long they last and how high they go. This determines the power rating (kW) and energy capacity (kWh) the BESS needs.
2. Review the tariff structure
Savings depend on demand charges, time-of-day tariffs and any applicable utility rules. A tariff review shows how much value peak shaving can realistically deliver.
3. Size power and energy separately
Power rating determines how much load the system can support at one time; energy capacity determines for how long. Both must match the peaks you want to reduce.
4. Evaluate safety and site requirements
- Battery chemistry and thermal management
- Fire detection and suppression
- Indoor or outdoor enclosure and IP rating
- Grid connection and protection requirements
5. Consider additional value
The same BESS can also store solar energy, provide backup power and improve power quality, which strengthens the business case.
