VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) batteries have been the standard for UPS systems for decades. Lithium batteries, usually lithium iron phosphate, are now a common alternative for critical facilities. Each has clear strengths.
Footprint and weight
Lithium systems typically need significantly less floor space and weigh much less for the same energy, which helps in space-constrained server rooms and upper floors.
Service life
VRLA batteries are rated by design life and are sensitive to temperature. Lithium batteries usually offer a longer service life and tolerate higher temperatures, which can reduce the number of replacements over the life of the UPS.
Upfront and lifecycle cost
VRLA has a lower upfront cost. Lithium costs more initially but may offer a lower total cost of ownership through longer life, reduced cooling needs and fewer replacements.
Monitoring and maintenance
Lithium systems include a battery management system (BMS) that monitors cell voltage, temperature and state of charge. VRLA banks benefit from periodic impedance and capacity testing.
Compatibility
Lithium can only be used where the UPS supports it or the battery system is certified for that UPS. Always verify compatibility before planning a changeover.
Our team can compare both options for your load, backup time, space and budget.
